Sep. 28th, 2009 01:53 pmI took a detour by the post office at 4th and Lander on the way to work to drop off some mail, and was deflected by police - no northbound traffic on 4th past Lander. I slipped through Mickey D's to the PO and witnessed a zillion firetrucks and assorted emergency vehicles - finally got a chance to see what was going on: "Haz-mat fire in Seattle" EEP! What are they doing with a large container of titanium at PI&M??

Date: 2009-09-28 09:22 pm (UTC)Wikipedia says: "Titanium burns in air when heated to 1,200 °C (2,190 °F) and in pure oxygen when heated to 610 °C (1,130 °F) or higher, forming titanium dioxide.[7] As a result, the metal cannot be melted in open air as it burns before the melting point is reached, so melting is only possible in an inert atmosphere or in vacuum. It is also one of the few elements that burns in pure nitrogen gas (it burns at 800 °C or 1,472 °F and forms titanium nitride, which causes embrittlement).[16] Titanium is resistant to dilute sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, along with chlorine gas, chloride solutions, and most organic acids.[3] It is paramagnetic (weakly attracted to magnets) and has fairly low electrical and thermal conductivity.[2]"
So, again, what was it doing there, and HOW DID IT GET THAT HOT???
Wacky!
