Now, alongside the iconic Thai elephant, the Suphalak, Korat, Siamese, Konja, and Khao Manee cat breeds are a part of Thailand's cultural representation. Each breed has its own mythology, purrsonality, and cute characteristics that we're pawsitively obsessed with.

We've known from the beginning that cats were going to rule the world, and this is the first step to that happening. It may be a small step, but it is still a step. The Thai government has named its 5 indigenous cat breeds as part of Thailand's "national identity". Some of these breeds are rarer than others, like the Suphalak, a chocolate-colored cat with fierce features, and others are more well-known, like the Siamese cat.

Seeing as we love all kinds of cats here at I Can Has Cheezburger, we did some digging and found all the lore your feline-fanatic brain would ever hope for regarding these cute kitties. It's purrfectly fascinating to know that some Suphalak cats were thought to bring good luck, and others disaster. The Korat cats weren't for sale. They were instead given as gifts, especially to newly married couples. The Khao Manee were kept inside the royal palace, thought to bring good luck!

There aren't many people we can geek out about cats with, so this kind of news is purrfect for us. It's not every day you get to learn about rare and unique cat breeds that are now national symbols.

We know where our next trip is going to be, Thailand, here we come!

It's time for another purrfect collection of viral cat tweets to start the week with!

Another Monday is upon us, and yet again, as always, we are completely not ready for all that this entails. Another week of work, another week of craziness in the world, another week of having to do things that we don't want to do because we are adults, and if we don't do those things, then who is going to take care of our spoiled cats at home? And still… with all of that, there is one thing on Monday morning that is always pawsome, and that is the fresh collection of cat tweets that we bring you.

Every single week, we take is upon ourselves to put together the finest collection of viral cat tweets fresh from twitter. We think of this as one of our most impurrtant tasks of the week. We go onto that platform, we sift through all the madness, and we find the things that people actually want to see - the viral cat stories, memes, and adorable pictures - and put them all together into one collection. A collection of absolute purrfection. Something that you will actually want to start your Monday with.

And isn’t everything risk?

The beloved lives
Then dies,
Then (if we’re lucky)
Rises again
Into a poem or song

Or into the world
In some other form
Impossible to predict.

Simplest story, oldest tale:

Sparrows sing it
From every hedge;

And swallows, also,
From their nests on the ledge.

It's Monday! Let the great shitshow begin. We're supposed to have severe weather today, so that could be fun. Yoda will not be happy. They've got us in the Enhanced threat area, so there's the chance of storms, wind, hail and possibly tornadoes. No thank you, I don't want it. Iam not fond of storms and the dog is terrified, so it's going to be a long night.

Right now, it's just foggy and bleh, so we'll see how much of it we're going to get. Actually, as of this morning, they've downgraded them to strong storms instead of severe, so maybe that's a good thing.

Yesterday was a day of nap. I convinced Jess and we went to the Asian buffet in Catonsville, which is about a 30minute ride. Umi Hot Pot and sushi buffet is a small chain, but very tasty. It had some Chinese, some Korean, and some Japanese. For a buffet, it was damn near amazing.

The sushi is up at the front, and it was definitely a crowd pleaser. Then was the hot pot meat and vegetables. Then began the first of like eight stations, each holding about 10 dishes. We didn't hot pot owing to getting full on the rest of the stuff. On round one, I hit the hot tables. I had braised pork belly that was delicious as well as 1/2 a garlicky lobster tail which was very tasty ad some General Tso's that actually had a little spice to it. The sushi was a standout for round 2, especially the hamachi tuna nigiri, which was delicious. Round 3, I was picky. I got more pork belly, a slab of beef and I also tried abalone, which I decided was not my thing, at least how it was cooked. The snow crab legs were mid after all the really good Dungeness legs I've had.

Finally, very full, we grabbed my sister a box and headed home. Not long after arriving, I realized that I was tired and had a headache, so I went and took a "short nap." I figured I'd be up in 30 min. 2 hours later, I got out of bed and had some coffee to wake up for game.

It did it's trick, and I was ready when game started. We stumbled into a town infested with low-level undead, and well, we made big boom. There was an evil necromancer, who we beat the holy hell out of before he used a spell to run away from us. I look forwards to him showing up again, after a bit of a level up to kick our asses. This is the game where I'm playing the slightly overpowered Wizard. He's a bladesinger, so he he's hard to hit, and he has devastating magic that he can use in concert with his sword. Right now, he's at level 11, which means spells up to 6fh level, which are baller. I only get one of them for now, but soon. Soon I will have two! It was a great game. We spent the session just beating the hell out of these zombies and ghouls, and it was super fun. I was able to kill 14 of them with one well placed Fireball. It was amazing. Also the spell Steel Wind Strike. Five hits at 5 enemies and everyone hit and killed that particular undead.

52 days to Alaska. *runs around in circles screaming*. I've got a few things that I need to get before we go. More underwear and socks, definitely. The rest, I kind of need to wait to see what the weather up there does. Right now, it's fucking cold, but I'm hoping that spring comes soon. I'd like temps closer to 60 than 30, please. If I have to take the heavy coat, I will, but I'd rather not. Takes up a lot of space in the luggage. Though I think I'm going to be okay as far as that goes. Leggings and t-shirts don't take up a ton of space. The jeans and dresses might take up some, but I plan to have plenty of room for souvenirs, too. Gotta have room for that.

I'm mentally skimming the part where I'm going to have to be locked in a plane for 5 hours. I'm not really a fan of that, but alas. I know Jess is worrying about TSA and border control, but I'm thinking everything will go okay. *fingers crossed*. Even with the top surgery, I think they'll be okay. They are perfectly willing to lie and say that they had the breast cancer gene, and had them taken if anyone hassles them. I'm honestly more worried that my sister is on some list for being outspoken about her liberal views. We'll see how it goes.

I did find on the flights to Chicago two years ago and Detroit last year that going first class made a difference in comfort on the flight. I'm going to assume the same is going to be true of Seattle. It's a longer flight, but I think being in a comfy seat, and being able to move around a bit will help. I'll have my kindle and my phone and if I want it, my laptop. With Tmobile, the internet is free, so I can surf the net, maybe do some schoolwork. We'll see what I want to do. I know Alaska has a lot of free movies and stuff to watch. So maybe I'll watch something. It'll be pretty early to drink, so I'll probably just have a cranberry juice with club soda. It looks pretty and tastes good, and it's appropriate for a flight that departs at 7am East Coast time and lands at 9:51am West Coast time. A wee bit early to drink, I think. It'll be almost 1pm in my brain, but still. I will save that til we get to Vancouver. I may have a wine with dinner, we'll see.

Today is going to be bugfuck at work, and I may have to ask A & J directly what they want me to do. Though if we have storms, it may not be as bad. Especially since a lot of school systems are closing/letting out early. Do I take calls, do I do my new job? Throw a girl a bone. Later this week, I will see if they have a moment to go over what I should be doing starting next week.

Tomorrow is supposed to be quieter weather wise, thankfully. Though if the weather affects call volumes today, it may be crazy tomorrow instead of today. You never really know with our patients. We've been really busy the last couple of months. Every day there's a point where there's 10+ calls waiting. We're just really getting hammered.

Next month, they're "upgrading" our phone system, and no one is looking forward to it. It's going to be VOIP, and I'm expecting massive problems. Right now, it's not fully intergrated with our system, and I don't know if that'll be fixed before it goes live.

I'm got a second headset that I'm not sure will work, but we're going to give it a try. I want to have a good backup, because the one I have is over 2 years old. If the one I got doesn't work I'll just get another of the ones like I have. I love this headset. The only reason I got the other was because the one I like is rather expensive. In retrospect, I probably should have just gotten the one I wanted. *shrug*

The plumeria pendant I got is supposed to come today. I am excited about that. I can't wait to see what it looks like in person! I've already got the chain for it, so that'll be nice. I can wear it whenever I go out again. (Probably not anytime soon. lol. I'm a homebody.

Okay, time for me to go forth and get myself together. Everyone have an outstanding Monday!

The Jewish War: Book 3

Last week: The Jews are basically in an abusive relationship with Rome and have no good options; they choose the particular bad option of picking a war with Rome that they can't win. The Romans are terrible. Also continuing discussion here about Britannicus, Messalina, and the Praetorians.

This week: Vespasian comes down like a ton of bricks. That whole !!!! part of Josephus happens, where he gets stuck in the cave with a bunch of others and invents and wins the Josephus problem (well, in the text it says they draw lots, so he doesn't actually really cite what developed into the problem) (*) and surrenders to the Romans once he and another guy are the only ones left, and prophesies to Vespasian that he will become emperor. ([personal profile] selenak: Is it Feuchtwanger's invention to add the nomenclature of Messiah in there too? That definitely... upped the ante.)

(I'll comment more on this tomorrow -- I got done with the reading late and obviously barely got this written.)

Next week: first part of book 4, to "Despite the Zealotes didn't exactly behave as if they disbelieved the prophecies, they themselves contributed to their fulfillment" (Josephus describing the Zealotes as the worst!)

(*) E. wanted to know what I was reading, so I told her about the Josephus problem, and she said, "Real-world applications of math!"

Since the last post (See here.)  one of my two readers took issue when I recommended the new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

I do recommend it highly. I mean, like many SF films, it’s dumb as a stick but it is, as they say, the journey that is important.

Okay, okay. It’s not that dumb.

He insisted I explain myself. If I don’t like time travel stories, how could I recommend GLHFDD?

There are a lot of problems with most time travel stories. And, yes, I’m looking right at Star Trek, all iterations. In the original series, time travel was introduced in season 1, episode 24. In The Next Generation, they held off until season 2, episode 13. In Voyager, season 1, episode 4. They started the series Star Trek Enterprise with time travel. In Deep Space Nine, season 1, episode 7. I could go on but I won’t.

Let’s think about that. They have the entire galaxy to work with. All these different suns, planets, different species, different biologies, and we have to look for our own past to tell stories? The Expanse didn’t need it. Star Wars didn’t need it. The Alien franchise didn’t need it.

This site claims to have 6,000 time travel movies made since 1896. Given that, is it realistic to go down to that well every time you need inspiration?

I do not say that there are no recent time travel stories that aren’t fun. Time Bandits is one of my personal favorites. I’m just saying that there are a number of SF tropes that have either 1) been done to death or 2) were tired from the beginning. Another similarly tired trope is the Higher Order Being. (That’s right. I’m looking at you, Q.)

A gimmick story works the first time it’s used. That’s why The Time Machine works. It’s because it was the first such idea in use. At least, that’s the idea. However, Wells reused his ideas from an earlier story, The Chronic Argonauts. (The title suggests to me people with chronic stomach distress, but I digress.)

After that, there are two ways the gimmick can be used: exploring the ramifications of the gimmick or using the gimmick to tell a story apart from the gimmick. For the first, I suggest Primer and David Gerrold’s The Man Who Folded Himself. Both of these explore many of the consequences of time travel.

And, after 6000 tries, I think we’ve exhausted the ramifications of that particular gimmick. Even in just the 21st century, there have been nearly five hundred films involving time travel. Come on! Given that most time travel stories are about correcting a mistake, (Even Good Luck* falls into this category.) I think we can dispense with most of them. How many times do we have to watch someone go into the past (or an alternate world) to save their nation/save the world/save their wife-brother-mother-son?

It’s like cop shows, doctor/hospital shows, and lawyer shows. After seventy years of television, there’s not much left to mine out of the subjects.

The second use of a gimmick is in service of something else. This is where works like Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die come into play. The time travel is barely on stage. It just hangs there like Checkhov’s gun. It’s important but it’s not the story. Time Bandits uses time travel for an absurdist journey. It’s essentially a way for Terry Gilliam to show us the inside of his mind.

When you lose the gimmick aspect of time travel, interesting things come up. Donnie Darko (2001) is a very interesting film involving time travel and the nature of cause and effect. It’s an example of my point. The film involves time travel but it isn’t about time travel. The day of the time travel gimmick is over. Long live it’s utility in storytelling.

I think the film Predestination (derived from what I think is one of the finest time travel stories ever written: All You Zombies by Robert Heinlein) is very interesting. In this film, time travel is central. But the main story is the arc of the main character. It does explore a gimmicky side of time travel—which the story also does—but it’s one that I don’t think had been done before as a film.

I don’t know other genres as well as I know SF so I won’t speak to them. SF has tropes that have also been done to death. At this point stories involving time travel, Higher Order Being, first alien contact, etc., have been done and redone so many times that I’m jaded. I don’t want just another time travel story to save the world. Or a first contact where the alien turns out to be the good guy. Or eats people. Or nearly every Frankenstein story for the last twenty years.

This is not to say that there isn’t still meat on those old, old bones. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is pretty fresh. The Expanse had a pretty original take on first contact. I thought both Poor Things and Moore’s Anima Rising were both interesting takes on Bride of Frankenstein. I’m looking forward to seeing The Bride.

Even I’ve written two time travel stories. One published, Another Perfect Day, and one not. (Another Perfect Day is collected here.) APD was, essentially, a story that described the impossibility of time travel. I.e., one could travel in time but only to a time that had no relation to your own. That pesky causality thing.

There’s even time travel regarding Orange Voldemort.

Hm. Time travel to the past to save the world.

Okay. Sign me up.

that the Roman calendar was batshit.

Today is the Ides, okay, and yesterday was pridie Ides, so far so good, and the day before that was three days before the Ides, because the Romans a. counted backwards and b. did this weird inclusive counting, so Friday, Saturday, Ides = three days.

(Which is also how Good Friday is three days before the Resurrection, when it blatantly isn't.)

Hi!

I have a character in a sci-fi universe who ends up "shipwrecked" alone on a completely uninhabited planet for two years. The planet, and the specific environment he lands in, are perfectly habitable by humans (we are in soft scifi territory here, very Star Trek inspired) and he's able to survive with some effort. (The details of how are not really important to the story - I know at least that he's the kind of guy who'd be able to salvage some tech and emergency supplies from his wrecked ship, and I'm comfortable with brushing past the details of what exactly he brought with him - but if anyone's really interested in coming at it from that logistical angle, I won't stop you!)

What is more relevant to the story is how this experience would continue to affect him by the time he's back home safely. I think there are a bunch of possible avenues here and I'd love to see people's takes on how they would approach this or approach researching it. For example, here are some of my cursory thoughts:
  • PTSD is certainly a likely long-term complication
  • It's implied that his shipwrecking was not an accident/was engineered maliciously - I imagine this is something he has dwelt on heavily throughout the two years and will affect his ability to trust people (and to visit other uninhabited planets in the future!). Seems like it would be easy to get caught in delusional spirals in a situation like that.
  • I know that prolonged isolation can cause hallucination/psychosis in some cases, especially in solitary confinement, sensory deprivation contexts, etc. Is that as much of a risk in this case? And if so, do you think he'd still be experiencing psychotic symptoms after the fact?
  • One of his personality traits is that he's fairly attention-seeking - I think it's likely this incident will exacerbate that and make him more desperate for connection
  • It'll probably alter how he approaches social situations in the future in general; that's something I'll definitely be thinking about
  • Perhaps he got into the habit of talking to himself on the planet, and this never went away

I confess to having a number of fast food apps – mainly for the purpose of getting discounts (replacing the old chore of coupon clipping). Sure, the companies track my redemption habits, but I don’t really care. If they keep wanting to offer me discounts, I’m frugal enough to keep taking them.

I provide my birthday to these apps as they give me special offers for my birthday. I thought I should itemize what I got this year for future reference.
